Safe and Sound Protocol
Children and Adults
I am always reading and looking for new techniques and tools that can enhance treatment. The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is based on years of research by Dr. Stephen Porges and consists of a 5-day therapeutic listening program. This tool is based on Poly-Vagal theory, which involves the vagus nerve and its affect on regulating our physiological state. The listening program is tuned specifically to enhance children and adults social engagement while simultaneously calming the nervous system. It is well supported by empirical evidence and effective in treating children with autism, ADHD, and trauma.
This tool is not meant to replace other therapies. It enhances the patient’s ability to make use of treatment because they are no longer in constant fight or flight. The SSP has also been studied with adults and shown to be clinically effective. This has great implications for individuals with PTSD, who are hyper-vigilant and those adult patients with symptoms of ADHD. This is a non-invasive intervention that has produced positive results and can enhance one’s ability to make use of therapy. I have completed the training that makes me eligible to administer this protocol. The SSP is administered on 5 consecutive days with a 60 minute listening session provide on each. This can be billed to some insurances.
