The Weight of Sound is a psychodynamic group that uses music to explore relevant topics for individuals struggling with Co-Occurring illnesses. It was developed ten years ago and has been run extensively over the past decade with positive results. The group involves listening to music that has been carefully selected and paired together to create a cohesive plan for each group session. The group is offered for both men and women. At this time it is not run as a co-ed group. The curriculum focuses on relapse prevention through an exploration of the psychodynamic ideas of repetition compulsion, the '“unlived life of the other,” and psychological defenses. Topics include regret, hope, guilt, and relationships.
Music from Sia, The Gaslight Anthem, Atmosphere, Logic, and Brandi Carlile are just a few examples of what makes up this group. Participants need no musical ability or familiarity with the artist used. I developed this group to meet the needs of a population who was bored with treatment and struggled with their attention span. If this group interests you or you would like to refer a patient please send me an email or call.
